Hi everyone, I’m Mia Hernandez. If you’re looking for fresh ideas for things to do around Lakewood, I’ve picked out some of my favorite parks, trails, and local gems that are perfect for weekends, afternoons, or anytime you want to get outside or explore.
Parks & Nature Escapes
Bear Creek Lake Park is Lakewood’s crown jewel for a reason. With over 2,600 acres, it has something for everyone—swimming beaches, boating, fishing, camping, hiking trails, and even archery. It’s a go-to when you want an all-day nature fix.
William F. Hayden Park (Green Mountain) gives amazing mountain views and solid terrain for trail walking, running, or biking. If you want to feel like you’ve escaped the city without traveling far, this is it.
Bear Creek Greenbelt offers wetlands, fishing ponds, and lovely riparian zones—it’s ideal for wildlife spotting or quiet walks.
Local Favorites & Community Spaces
Belmar (Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park) blends shopping, dining, and green space. You can grab coffee, wander galleries, and enjoy a bit of history at Heritage Lakewood Belmar.
40 West Arts District is one of Colorado’s Certified Creative Districts. A great place to enjoy public art installations, performances, gallery shows, or just meandering downtown and catching something unexpected.
Trails, Reservoirs & Hidden Gems
Main Reservoir is a peaceful spot for fishing or relaxing walks with views of the Denver skyline.
Smith Reservoir nearby offers additional space for nature viewing, hiking, and birding. If you want fewer crowds, these kinds of spots are great.
Peak View Park is newer and partially undeveloped, which means trails are less crowded and there’s a more wild feel. Good for low-key hikes or letting the kids explore.
Great Ideas for the Weekend
- Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it at Bear Creek Lake Park—bring your hiking shoes or swim gear.
- Start early at Green Mountain for sunrise views and a good trail workout before the crowds.
- Do an art crawl through Belmar or in the 40 West Arts District—keep an eye out for pop-ups or gallery openings.
- Go fishing or cast a line at Main or Smith Reservoir, or just watch the birds with someone you enjoy.
- Check out community events at the Lakewood Cultural Center or local outdoor concerts—there’s often something fun going on.
Lakewood has over 100 parks totaling nearly 7,000 acres of open space. That means there are always places to get away without going far. Whether you want lush green trails, tranquil reservoirs, creative energy, or family-friendly outings, there’s no shortage of options around town. See you out there!
